Dr. Sidney Cohen, a Mental Level of Being Council member with The Gathering Haven, will speak on the topic of Betrayal Trauma. When we have been betrayed in the past it has most likely been by someone close to us, either by a loved one, a partner, or a supervisor. You may not have heard of it being described this way, but many of us have experienced it. Whether we’ve been betrayed by a loved one, a supervisor, our job, it’s important to acknowledge these events in our lives.

More about Betrayal Trauma: Jennifer Freyd, a nationally-renowned expert on the psychology of sexual violence and institutional betrayal, introduced the concept of betrayal trauma in 1994. Betrayal trauma theory (BTT) suggests that the way a person processes and remembers a negative event is influenced by how much they see it as a betrayal by a trusted person. BTT also emphasizes the importance of betrayal as a precursor to dissociation, which can be a way to preserve a relationship with an abuser. Betrayal trauma can cause a range of negative emotions, including anxiety, fear, depression, and self-doubt. It can also lead to trauma symptoms like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex grief.
